AI At School

AI is the one thing being used daily without knowledge. AI is used more than ever, but is it reliable? How do we know it won’t conquer the world, destroy humankind, and establish a hierarchy? The answer? We don’t. However, we know that AI is not perfect and can be a steady source of entertainment. But the main reason for using AI is for help. Whether it’s quicker, more accurate, experienced, knowledgeable, or talented, AI is meant to improve our daily lives. But at KLS, the top three most used and helpful AI tools are ChatGPT, Khanmingo, and image generators such as NightCafe.

ChatGPT is famous for being a tool with various informational, occasionally amusing, outputs. ChatGPT first went viral when users asked ChatGPT to create a biblical verse about removing a peanut butter sandwich from a VCR (videocassette recorder), or for Elvis-themed fantasy weapons. Chat GPT can translate text, rephrase paragraphs, and provide a long detailed list based on your input. It can get a bit off-topic sometimes which can affect the experience of the user and I can attest to the fact that Chat GPT is as good at math as a fifth grader. It is terrible at solving basic Algebra 1 equations and it gives such a long explanation that is barely ever correct (or logical for that matter). Even if it can be terrible sometimes, Chat GPT is used daily to make our everyday lives easier and do some things for us because, let's admit it, humans are lazy animals.

Khanmingo, the tool that nobody uses except for certain math concepts, can deliver some entertaining responses to questions. Khanmingo, as demonstrated by 8th-grade English classes, is often confused and creepily polite. After making a mistake, the AI realizes that fact and apologizes repeatedly, preventing you from effectively communicating with it unless you restart your conversation. The writing coach is somewhat useful and Khanmingo gives some valuable feedback on your writing, effectively improving it. Keep in mind that this only applies when it is not going in a loop, seemingly broken by hopeless writing. In general, Khanmingo can be a useful tool that effectively evaluates everything from how bad your writing is to how good you are at math.

Image generators are the new Picassos but can they outshine humans and our extraordinary creativity levels? The answer is no. AI does have potential when combined with a human to alternate and generate images but the AI itself generating images from a prompt is highly unlikely to produce the result you desire. Image generators generate images quickly and make them look realistic and cool, but the ending image is often almost 70% different from your desired image. For one, image generators produce images with heavy stereotyping and biases despite the amount of effort you put into the prompt. Sometimes, images can be wonky with people in the images lacking fingers, facial features, and texture. It is quite useful in projects but you have to consider the misconceptions of the generated image and determine whether or not it is beneficial to your project.

Image generators, Khanmingo, and ChatGPT are valuable tools for school projects, but they can produce unreliable results. As a result, it is important to exercise caution when evaluating benefiting off of the output of these tools and triple-checking it for errors before implementing it into your schoolwork.
