2021 Homecoming Week
By Adhya K and Sita V
Homecoming. A fun-filled dance after a long awaited homecoming football game, played by the school’s most reputable football team. Except we don't have a football team. Or sports really. Or even homecoming—before last week.
KLHS’s first homecoming was last Friday and the first dance of the year. Planning it was quite a rocky process; figuring out how to smartly spend the tiny budget of 225 dollars residing in Derek’s pocket required a *lot* of discussion, but the Events Team was able to buy enough decorations and plenty of food.
Setting up the dance had its own challenges. They included the fact that not enough people showed up to help with setup, time constraints, last minute changes, and such. “Planning the event and setting it up was honestly super stressful and quite frantic because of all the surprise setbacks, “ says Adhya, our Events Manager. “However, thanks to some quick thinking and last minute creative changes (shoutout to AJ and AJ’s mom for bringing us some last minute lights to use), it all worked out in the end.”
The actual dance itself went beautifully. “I really liked Homecoming—It was fun,” comments Arjun as he reminisces on the dance. People were lining up for the amazing food outside—The students enjoyed all the delicious boba, bundt cakes, chips, homemade snickerdoodles, apple cider and more. Jacob’s awesome DJing kept the dance floor lively with (derpy KLS dances here) I “I literally puked from spinning on my knee so much,” says John who tore up the dance floor with his hidden talent for break dancing, which was a surprise for many. Not just John, but everybody enthusiastically got down and danced, even people who swore they wouldn’t. “Watching people dance that I didn’t expect to dance was fun,” Pooja P. comments. Unlike past dances, “we actually got all of the KLHS students to come to the floor and dance, and that was pretty awesome,” Jay B adds on.
Here are some Highlights from the event:
The tarp covering the emergency light fell down, so Vivek had to stand on a chair and hold up a black board over the light as “Apple Bottom Jeans” was playing.
There was also a train (that Pooja started) and some T-pose squatting (started by Timo and Ainsel).
Miguel was picked up and carried from the back portico to the dance inside as a fun attempt to start dancing.
And lastly, best dressed definitely goes to Amartya, for his exquisite formal wear of basketball shorts and a t-shirt.
Our Events Manager, Adhya, wanted to share that she felt, “the event was a success and I’m so glad people liked it! I thought it was a fun way to kick off the year, and thank you to the rest of the Events team for all your hard work and to everyone who came!”
The students enjoyed the dance a lot; many were surprised when it ended and felt it had gone by too fast. They said they were excited with the dance’s success and can’t wait to see more!
