Spotlight on Geraint

Over the course of the last six months, many of the students at Khan Lab School have been learning the pronunciation of one of their teacher’s names: Geraint Webb. This is mainly due to the fact that Geraint doesn’t know how to pronounce his own name. The first part of his name is pronounced with a ‘g’ sound, not a ‘j’ sound. It sounds like a bear growling. The ‘ai’ is pronounced as ‘eye’, so his entire name is pronounced as ‘Ger-eye-nt’.

Geraint grew up in Cornwall, England. Even there, people still pronounced his name incorrectly, because his name is Welsh.

Currently a Physics TA and soon to be geometry teacher at KLS, Geriant has had a fascinating life. For example, one of the most interesting things Geraint did, which became a topic of one of his college essays, was participating in a national dog training show when he was eleven. “I went on a Children's BBC show called, “Who Let The Dogs Out,” where I competed against other children to be the ‘best’ dog trainer,” Geraint said during an interview. He went with his sister’s dog, Sparky, a black and tan Jack Russell. After his experience with Sparky, he fell in love with dogs and begged his parents to get him one. He got Quinki, a border collie, and did freestyle heel work to music (dancing along with his dog in a prepared routine on a certain type of music) on the national stage with him.

Going on the national stage wasn’t the only interesting adventure Geraint went on. Geraint traveled to dozens of countries including Poland, Finland, France, Belgium, and many more. Poland stuck out as one of his favorites because of an amazing Cathedral made out of salt deposits he visited. After all of his travels, Geraint says his favorite form of transportation is trains, and thinks trains in the USA are nowhere near the level of those in Europe.

Geraint is currently a physics TA at Khan Lab School and will soon be the geometry teacher. It is great to have him as a teacher at KLS.
