Student Spotlight: Student Council

You may be wondering, “What is the Student Council and what do they do?” The Student Council is a group of individuals who are elected as the leaders of the school. Nunu Z. is the Chair, Jay B. is the Vice Chair, Maddie W. is the Communications and Marketing Manager, Adhya K. is the Events Manager, and Robert B. is the Business Manager. They meet weekly to carry out the wishes of the student body and the Leadership Team.
If you want to know what the Student Council positions do, you can always check the Student Resource Hub. Don’t be lazy! But if you must know now, here’s the answer: The Chair leads the Leadership Team’s projects and operations. The Vice Chair acts as an advocate for the Leadership Team and promotes the student advocacy committee. The Communications and Marketing Manager communicates with other KLS clubs, guests, as well as teachers and students for collaboration opportunities. The Events Manager orchestrates all Leadership Team and school events. And lastly, the Business Manager navigates all money-related tasks. For the members of the Student Council, managing these tasks so far has been a blast. Robert says it's been an “extremely fun leadership experience, while maintaining an actual importance within the Leadership Team.” In all, they feel good about helping and representing the student body.
The Student Council is planning a lot for the KLHS community, such as better outdoor equipment, an online student store, and fun seasonal events. In Nunu’s words, they are still “figuring out what works and what doesn't so future student leaders can build off of a solid foundation.” This is particularly true because this is only the second year the Student Council has existed at the school, and the first year it has been in-person. “We do our best to carry out the wishes of the student body and Leadership team. We report back on how the work groups in Leadership have progressed and the next individual steps we need to take in order for their goals to happen,” says Maddie. Adhya adds, “we try as hard as we can to be fully transparent with the student body and make what they want happen!”
The Student Council is a fun place to work. Some advice for people who want to be part of the Student Council in the future is to show that you care about improving the school and to put your best effort into campaigning. Most importantly, if you want to improve or learn from our community, join the Leadership Team or the many clubs and activities that stem from it!
