While the mockingbirds sweetly sing among the blooming cherry blossoms, while the daffodils and Californian poppies dot the lush green hills, while the warmth of the sun dries the morning dew, while all the harbingers of Californian spring welcome the new season, students at Khan Lab School are still facing an eternal winter.

The AC usage has become notorious at Khan Lab School, and even after many requests and protests from students to raise the temperature (even during the temperate Bay Area spring), the cold air at KLS still blasts from the air vents.

“I literally have to bring a puffer jacket to school everyday and wear it inside school to be able to focus and learn,” says one KLS student.

“I have to wear two outfits everyday, one warm one inside school, and then a cooler outfit for when I go outside. So like I change outfits once I walk through the fridge,” says another student. “Fridge,” has been the new nickname coined for KLS, but even after many suggestion box entries and students directly asking admin to increase the temperatures, KLS still remains a “fridge”.

However, students at KLS have decided to use this seemingly negative aspect of overusing air conditioning as an opportunity. The KLS Warm-Up society provides warm drinks, tea bags, and comfy socks to help students feel more comfortable with the cold.

“If we can’t change it, we have to adapt,” stated the founder of the Warm-Up Society. “We wanted to provide our students with comfy items to feel better in our very air-conditioned learning environment.”

For now, it seems that the air conditioning at KLS will continue blasting, but at least students have found a creative way to make their school environment more manageable.
