Guess who was listening to which song (results at the end)
Sharanya Killshot - Eminem
Ryan Morning Dew - Kelsey Lu
Vibhas Sad Song - Bo Burnham
Nunu Candles - Daughter
“I think it [music] is satisfying. I don’t really care what other people think about pop, but I just like good beats, that's what matters to me in music,” Vivek says, as I interview him in between classes.
“He likes Justin Bieber,” interrupts Maddie.
“Some of the songs!” says Vivek.
At KLHS, we have many avid music listeners so I decided to interview them on what they were listening to in order to find out more about our community's taste in music as well as their preferred streaming platforms. In these interviews, I discovered new music and uncovered some very interesting opinions.
“All the songs that Sharanya listens to have very pretentious titles,” Megan states, looking towards Sharanya.
Minutes later, I asked Sharanya what the last song she listened to was.
Turns out, it was “Candles” by Daughter.
When asked for an opinion he had on music, Ryan stated without hesitation, “French music is bad.”
“I think music is a great form of expression,” Nunu declared.
People listen to music for many reasons: to help deal with emotions or express themselves; it's used as a distraction and supports us in our daily lives. It also provides motivation that fuels people to create, dance, paint, sleep, work, and even more. Music is an important constant in the lives of many (though I did find a surprising amount of people who didn’t listen to music, which is valid too, of course). “I don’t listen to music, I’m not a good person to interview here,” stated Miguel.
“What music streaming service do you prefer/use (Spotify, Apple music, Pandora, etc.)?” I ask, looking for the one right answer.
“Spotify 100% because Apple Music sucks,” said Nunu right away.
“Spotify because it's universal and it works on all devices,” Zaeem said.
Vibhas said, “I use Apple Music because that's what my family uses, I’m not opposed to Spotify or anything like that.”
“I don’t really have a preference. I listen to them all.” - Lejoi
“Youtube Playlists.” - Adhya
In my exploration, I sought to see what artists are popular as a whole at KLHS, but I struggled with this because of the wide variety of genres and tastes in music in the community. I did find a lot of support for LoFi songs and “calmer music to sleep to” as well as a lot of mixed feelings on Taylor Swift and pop music.
“I like the 10 minute version of All Too Well [by Taylor Swift] because it's really creative and it's probably unlike any other song I’ve ever listened to, not biased at all,” claims Maddie, completely biased.
“Country music is like actually disgusting. I think rap is chill. But like pop is like really good, I feel like a lot of people hate on pop.” - Adhya
“Taylor Swift is overrated.” - Vivek
“Don’t include that.” - Maddie
“Not a fan of pop songs, majority of them, I feel like they all sound the same.” - Ameera
“I think it was in class we were listening to Taylor Swift radio.” - Lejoi
“I listened to like boring sleep music like study music to fall asleep.” - Megan
And finally, I will leave everyone with some words of wisdom from Vibhas that I find inspiring:
“Honestly, music is really subjective, so if you judge someone for [liking] a certain type of music… you shouldn’t really judge people for it.”
Here's a Spotify playlist that contains the songs that this month's listeners reported listening to:
Results:
Candles by Daughter
“I don’t know, she’s so much more calm than a lot of the other artists. She's good to sleep to I guess.” - Sharanya
Killshot by Eminem
“It sounds good.” - Ryan
Sad Song by Bo Burnham
“The last song I listened to was “OH.” I like Bo Burnham, so the last song I listened to was “The Sad Song” by Bo Burnham because it's really funny. He makes jokes about sad things. Funny songs make you have a good mood.” - Vibhas
Morning Dew by Kelsey Lu
“It reminds me of morning and it's morning right now.” - Nunu
